Dallas life insurance startup Bestow is partnering with emotional support app Empathy, which is designed to provide technology to navigate the death of a loved one.

Empathy’s app and premium services are available to beneficiaries in 20 states at no cost, according to Bestow. Beneficiaries and up to nine friends or family members can use the app to assist in things like filing a life insurance claim, planning a funeral and writing an obituary.

“The emotional loss is a difficult experience from a financial perspective and just the amount of time it takes to deal with that,” said Ben Armstrong, chief marketing officer at Bestow.

The announcement comes just after Bestow dismissed 14% of its workforce in June, citing “changing market conditions,” according to Bestow co-founder and CEO Melbourne O’Banion. The layoff affected 41 of Bestow’s employees.

The layoffs came after Bestow announced plans in February to hire up to 150 more workers in 2022 to build on strong revenue growth over the past couple of years. Doubling its revenue year-over-year in 2021, the company attributed its growth to trends amplified by the pandemic and its ability to attract a younger consumer base than traditional life insurance products.

Armstrong said the company is continuing to grow its products.

“We’re super excited to continue to announce innovations within the space,” he said.

Headquartered in New York and Tel Aviv, Empathy partners with different organizations, including Fortune 100 companies, HR benefit providers, insurers and hospice care. The company was launched in April 2021 by Ron Gura and Jonathan Bergman.

According to the app’sempathy.com/costofdying”> Cost of Dying 2022 Report, families spend 420 hours on average tending to their loved one’s affairs after a death. The average total expense after death is $12,702, and almost 80% of the survey’s respondents said they used their own funds to cover expenses rather than relying on a life insurance policy.
